At Newhall we believe that Language and Literacy is fundamental to the overall development of the child and their access to the curriculum in all its aspects. We aim to deliver quality teaching of basic and higher order Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening skills to enable children to become confident and successful in their Literacy.

In Nursery (age 3+) to Year 2 we follow the ‘Read Write Inc’ programme of synthetic phonics to teach children to read and spell.   This programme is for children in Nursery (age 3+) to Year 2 who are learning to read and write. Any pupils in Year 3 and 4 who need to catch up may also access RWI to help them make rapid progress in reading.

Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to blend them to read and spell. The scheme includes both a reading and a writing focus. Pupils work within ability groups which are reviewed regularly to ensure children are making rapid progress with their reading. These groups are usually smaller than a normal class size to enable us to target and support children to achieve their best and learn to read as quickly as possible.

A reading information session will be held each year, in September, for parents and careers. We will explain how staff will teach children to read at Newhall and provide an information pack to help parents understand how to support their child at home.

You can find out more about Read, Write, Inc. on the website below where there are videos to help parents support children learning to read at home and explain how to pronounce the sounds the children are learning in their RWI lessons.

In KS2 we follow the Read Write Inc ‘Literacy and Language’ and spelling programme. This is closely matched to the current primary National Curriculum to enable quality learning and teaching to take place. Writing is also linked to our Topic lessons where suitable.
